DEXJPUSJapanese Yen to U.S. Dollar Spot Exchange Rate — Current Value & Historical Data
What is Japanese Yen to U.S. Dollar Spot Exchange Rate?
The Japanese yen / U.S. dollar exchange rate (quoted as yen per one U.S. dollar, USD/JPY) is the noon-buying reference rate published each U.S. business day in the Federal Reserve Board's H.10 release, sourced from indicative interbank quotes. USD/JPY is the second-most-traded currency pair globally after EUR/USD. Because the Bank of Japan ran negative or zero short-term interest rates from 2016 through 2024 while the Fed normalized policy, USD/JPY has become the cleanest proxy for U.S.-Japan interest-rate differentials and a popular funding pair for carry trades: investors borrow in cheap yen and lend in higher-yielding dollar assets, which pushes the rate higher. After Japan abandoned the 360-yen Bretton Woods peg in 1971, the yen strengthened over decades to a record 75.72 in October 2011 amid post-tsunami repatriation. It then reversed sharply under Abenomics and Fed tightening, reaching 161.96 in July 2024, the weakest level since 1986, prompting the Ministry of Finance to intervene in the FX market.
