What is Crude Oil Prices: West Texas Intermediate (WTI) - Cushing, Oklahoma?

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil spot price is the daily cash-market price per barrel for the light, sweet crude oil grade delivered at Cushing, Oklahoma — the physical hub where WTI futures settle on NYMEX. The EIA publishes the series daily, sourced from market data providers, and it is the headline oil benchmark for the United States, quoted alongside Brent (the global seaborne benchmark) in every business news cycle. WTI prices flow into U.S. retail gasoline (with a typical three-to-six-week lag), airline fuel hedging, shale-producer capex decisions, and CPI energy components. The series has two historic extremes worth knowing: WTI closed at -$36.98 per barrel on April 20, 2020, the only day in the series' history with a negative settlement, when Cushing storage filled during the COVID-19 demand collapse and expiring May futures contracts forced holders to pay buyers to take physical delivery; and it spiked to $123.70 in March 2022 after Russia's invasion of Ukraine disrupted global flows.
